What your donation does
Among the goals of our Big Project are the following:
- Get digital images of all the non-public Commedia dell'Arte scenario manuscripts from before about 1620.
- Transcribe those, approxomately 400 scenarios into their original language.
- Create literal translations of those scenarios in English.
- Rework a new version of each scenario to make it playable by a modern troupe without themselves needing to do historical research.
- Play-test and refine each scenario a few times.
- Proofread this content for publication.
- Get commissioned artwork for the book covers.
- Publish those scenarios in our upcoming multi-volume set: "The Complete Early Commedia dell'Arte Scenarios".
- (2027 and beyond) Promote these books to theater folk, and school libraries.
- Teach and direct people of various ages and backgrounds in how to perform this style of play (outreach programs).
- Pay artists for the creation of historically consistent leather masks for use in workshops and performances.
- Work with new and existing groups, and produce these plays.
That first step is costing several thousand dollars, and on an immediate basis we are looking for donations to offset that expense. The commissioned cover art will also cost several thousand dollars. Most of these other steps will be done as labors of love (and can be group fun), so volunteer participants help. Among the other points above that will cost money are: Acquiring masks for the Acting Workshop, Proofreading, Travel & Outreach, and producing new stage and video productions. It is also likely that we will need to consult paleographers, and experts in Venetian before we are done.
So that's the story. The Big Project is glorious, but will take some money, and thanks in advance for helping.
